Inspiring ways to be well.

I am a swimmer at heart, but I find it difficult to meet people with goggles and a swim cap on and my face in the water, so I took up running (or limping at a fast clip) and cycling. I have raised money in support of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Colon Cancer Alliance, and others through triathlon, marathon, and cycling. I keep swimming pure and only swim for the fun of it. Best moment in life to date - swimming from Alcatraz without a wetsuit in 55 degree water. What made it so great? My mom was waiting for me on the shore. She has always been my biggest fan.

I am in grad school and my bank account is officially a sad state of affairs. In terms of population, it's looking a lot like Wyoming, just not much there.

But, I own a home. I always have food. I'm blessed to be in a great graduate program with an amazing scholarship. Can I afford an xbox? Not likely. Can I afford a blanket, a few books, and a bottle of cologne? Of course.

As is customary in my family, I went in search of someone who needed something for Christmas that they could not afford. Rather than select the children who have asked for new games for their Wii, I selected a gentleman in his 70s who asked for a lap blanket. When I returned the bag with the blanket, I also included some of my favorite Christmas books, a bottle of cologne, and a hand written note.

This time of year we all get so caught up in what we don't have and we often forget about others. Find a few minutes this year to do something nice for a total stranger. Canned goods, coats, blankets, or just a few kind words go a long way and you will be surprised how much you benefit from giving rather than receiving.

Have definitely been there, Lacey, with that grad school bank account. Good for you that your focus is on what you have and can offer. The team I work with is "adopting" people in need this Christmas and we have done the same: picked people asking for things like a sweatshirt, a belt, etc. I really like your idea of the handwritten note and will add that to my gifts. Have a great holiday!
