Switching out my office chair for the balance ball has been so beneficial! I'm not only strengthening my core muscles by improving my posture but I find I can breath better because my chest muscles are expanded. I find I'm more alert and on task during the course of the day because the blood is getting to the brain! Most of all, it forces me to incorporate fitness into my day and that makes me feel great!

This is a great idea! As someone who recently suffered significant back pain, I desperately need to strengthen my core. I may have to adopt this!

That's great! You must be quite coordinated to be able to stay balanced on it all day!

What size balance ball did you purchase for your desk? Also, did you ask HR for permission before you switched it in for your office chair?

Check with your HR department or supervisor if using a balance ball is permissible in your office environment. In some cases it may be a safety issue. If you are unable to use it at work, use it at home. I've used it while on my home computer and while watching tv. I'm fortunate because I work from a remote location so I can use it at will. I don't know what size ball I have as it came with a excercise DVD. I did measure the circumfernce which came to about 80' which has been the ideal height for my desk set-up. You can always check the packaging before purchase. There is usually a guide recommending which one to choose according to your height-but of course it is under the premise you will be using it for excercise(I'm 5'4'). You may want to choose one on the larger size if using it for my purpose so you can adjust the inflation to suit your need, remember it will 'squash 'when you sit on it. Always sit on it with both your feet set apart firmly on the floor. If your female, you certainly don't want to use it when wearing a dress! It can be tricky at first but it certainly helps your posture while sitting.

Some time ago I tried a chair designed to be kneeled on that was said to be good for the back. It didn't work for me - it actually made my back more uncomfortable. But I've found that regularly getting up to stretch and walk around helps the back and the psyche. A change of scene away from the computer screen is refreshing, and in strolling around there's often opportunity for a little chat with someone. We spend so much time at work it's important to try to build wellness promoting components into the work setting.

if no one is looking i like to roll it out so that my back is on the ball, and then my arms fall open. such a great chest stretch after hovering over the computer. getting caught doing this could result in serious office laughter!
