Inspiring ways to be well.

Hello! My name is Brittany, and I am the writer behind the :Deliciously Healthy Blog. Since Jan-2010, I have lost 40lbs! I started my weight loss journey, because I have a number of health issues, and I decided that I needed to take my health into my own hands. I was diagnosed with Lupus when I was 15, and then diagnosed with RA, when I was 18. A couple years later I was diagnosed with Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome, and low thyroid. That's 4 diagnoses in a 4yr period, if you lost count. I had also gained 76 pounds, in those 4 years. Being 76lbs over weight is unhealthy for anyone, but it was especially unhealthy for me, and my health issues. But now, after having lost 40 pounds, I'm a new, slimmer, and healthier me! This journey of mine is more than me simply wanting to wear skinny jeans. It has been a quest to becoming :Deliciously Healthy, so ALL of my dreams can come true! I'm almost half way there! With each new day, I get closer and closer to my goal of 120lbs, and becoming :Deliciously Healthy

In past attempts at losing weight, my husband and I would both start the journey together. We both had weight to lose, and thought it would be fun to do it together. The problem was, I rested my success on my husband's success. If he went off his diet, I would use it as an excuse to go off mine. If he ate pizza, then I ate pizza, etc. After a while, I would get frustrated with him. "I can't lose weight, unless you do!" "Stop taking me off my diet!" Finally I realized that I had to do this for me. No one else was responsible for my actions, but me. I couldn't wait on someone else for me to lose weight. And that was when I started to lose weight. If my husband wasn't going to start back up his diet until Monday, that was fine, but I wasn't waiting another minute. It took more discipline on my part. When my husband ordered pizza, I had to be strong enough to not use it as an excuse to go off my diet. I had to be responsible for my own actions. But I grew a lot during those times. Although he wasn't on a diet with me, my husband was a huge support to me. He was my cheerleader through my weight loss journey, and I couldn't have done it without his support. This year however, he has been very successful on his diet, and I am very proud of him! We are losing weight together, and it's been fun motivating and challenging each other. We've spent more time together by cooking healthy meals together, and going on long walks. I've learned a lot about being married, and trying to lose weight. It is very important to support and motivate each other, but don't rest your success on your spouse's success. You can still motivate each other, and lose weight, while not running the exact same race, if you know what I mean. How has your weight loss affected your relationship? Do you find it hard to lose weight, if your spouse is not on the same page as you? How do you get past that?

My husband is at a healthy weight and when I wanted something that wasn't good for me, I'd put dinner in his hands and hope he'd suggest something like calzones or pizza. He caught on to me quite quickly and put it all back in my hands and that was the best thing for me because now I know my health and well being are in my hands and he has agreed to eat what I cook and even try new things even GREEN things that he resisted in the past. Its very important to have that support system but you can't let your spouse derail you but by the same token you can't use them as an excuse to self sabotage. We have to OWN our health.

A 40 lb weight loss in one year is very impressive Brittany. Sounds like you've both put careful thought into how to make it work. And great that you have the support.

I love that last comment: We have to OWN our health. Agree- how we take care of ourselves is our decision. Equally hard is letting someone we care about manage their own health! We all have to come to it in our own way and time.
