Having been born in South Africa and having survived everything from poverty to riots Nirasha, known as Niri, shelved her desire for writing in a turbulent time to pursue a career in software engineering. After just barely dusting the remnants of Apartheid off, Niri set for the shores of USA to be a techno-geek by day while pursuing philanthropic interests by night. Fast forward 12 years later and a baby in tow Niri traded the rat race for her rug rats and turned back to her passion of writing at MommyNiri.com. Niri has been featured on Boston.com, Syracuse.com and India New England; and has worked on several charitable projects while harnessing the power of blogging like ending teacher funded classrooms, Rwanda Path2Peace, building playgrounds with Kaboom and the End Child Hunger campaign. We normally think of family, and more especially around the holidays. Family is that group of people you love or hate, or like most people, fit somewhere in between. Between the chaos, traditions, stress and laughter sandwiched between members of families – there may be someone missing in the picture. Family is just not blood relatives, though they are important too. For some relatives it takes an effort to get them interested and some are just not at that place in their life where they value keeping in touch. When you have kids somehow you try and pull everyone together and sometimes it is frustrating when it is not reciprocated.

Focus on those people who make your life a better place. Teachers, instructors, therapists, girlfriends, neighbors or anyone who helps you get through the day. Somehow with people being scattered all over the globe we form communities in different ways. Remember these people who understand you and know the simple things like your favorite beverage or your child’s favorite color.

By embracing the extended friends into your family circle, you just make your community bigger and stronger.

I totally agree. My "family" is made up of not only my blood relatives but those that I chose too. There's a big joke in my family that once you're called cousin, you're are IN!
