Hi!! My name is Karmen. I love people and love to bring sunshine to them. I am a Golden Retriever, about 7 years old...though we are not completely sure because I was a pathetic stray before I found my forever home.
I took my mom to obedience school. She is still a work in progress. I studied really hard and passed my Canine Good Citizen and Therapy Dog International tests. I have been an official volunteer for three years. I even have my own ID badges.
I go to the Sun City Hospice House in Ruskin, FL. We normally visit on Wednesday afternoons. I have a good energy and my presence brings joy and calmness to patients, families and even the staff. I sense who needs me and go right to them. When they pet me it feels really good to me and I bring some happiness to stressful and intense situations.
We also visit Palm Gardens, a nursing home in Ruskin, FL. I have made lots of friends there. I get lots of attention and sometimes I score animal crackers. The residents often reminisce about their favorite pets with me. I bring welcome excitement.
I love my job as a pet therapy volunteer. I know that my work is very important and we touch many people's lives in a positive way. It makes me feel really good to know that I can help make other people feel good!!

Karmen, I know your Auntie. She like you, occassionally visits around the office bringing joy. However, I have not seen her going for the in-cube belly rub.
Two of our old Basset Hounds were therapy dogs. It's amazing what a dog can do for people's spirits. What an amazing way to give back.
You've inspired me now. For anyone else in the Boston area with dogs that might like to get involved, here is a site with some local groups and requirements for becoming a therapy dog: http://www.caringcanines.org/who.html
karmen, we are SO proud of you! you bring lots of happiness and smiles to your family, too! ;)
