Inspiring ways to be well.

I love to dance and enjoy being a teacher of ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, lyrical & pointe. As I get older I teach more than I dance so I needed to find other ways to be in shape...joining a gym just didn't cut it for me. So currently my boyfriend and I hike, bike, and practice a form of martial arts called Oom Yung Doe. I also joined weight watchers and for the first time in my life am successfully losing weight the healthy way! I feel terrific and have so much energy :)

I have always struggled with weight loss but have never had the success I am having now. I had tried several weight loss programs without any progress. My doctor tested my thyroid function but the tests results were normal. It was not until I visited a holistic health center that I learned my problem had nothing to do with my eating and exercise habits but had everything to do with my inability to handle stress. I allowed stress to control me and in doing so had weakened my immune system, over-taxed my adrenal gland, and sent my cortisol levels through the roof. I knew my health problems would worsen if I did not do something so I tried stress reduction classes, books, tapes, and even yoga but found them all frustrating or boring. Then I happened to walk by a School of Oom Yung Doe and it has changed my life for the better!

I have never liked exercising and have terrible motivation. I would have to drag myself to the gym and I would hate it the whole time I was there. I would rush through my workout routine so I could get home quickly. I thought home videos would work but then I was lazy and never put them on. I was looking for an easy way out, “a magic pill” that would have instant results. I have since found that magic pill but it is far from easy. Oom Yung Doe practice is extremely challenging - tougher than any class at the gym, any workout a personal trainer has designed for me, or any workout video I have even seen and yet it is the first form of exercise I have ever loved! There are still days when I am not motivated and have to push myself to practice, but when I do, I always feel great afterwards. It is amusing to me that I chose a practice that is so challenging when I was looking for an easy solution. I had previously lost weight on a vitamin program suggested by a holistic doctor but that involved taking ten pills three times per day. That was just too many “magic pills” to take. In the last four months I have lost 15 pounds and am down two dress sizes without any pills, drinks, or food substitutes. I just practice and eat well balanced healthy meals. It is amazing to realize how simple it is to be healthy.

I started on a two month stress relief program specifically designed for me. I started to notice results in just one month. It was as if I was a new person; things that would have driven me through the roof did not faze me in the least. My friends and family were incredulous and told me to “keep doing whatever it is you are doing". In just four months I had strengthened my immune system too. The running joke in my family is that I am allergic to holidays as I would consistently get multiple colds from October through January. Going back as far as high school I was always sick for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Mostly I would have soar throats, sniffles, and coughs but as I got older and life became more stressful, I would start that way and end in serious chest colds that would knock me out for weeks. However, this past winter I did not get any colds. I was not sick for any extended periods of time. I may have felt run down a few times but nothing that lasted longer than 24 hours. Not being sick all winter has really confirmed for me how life saving Oom Yung Doe practice can be.

What is most eye-opening for me is that I now understand how mind and body are connected and that my thoughts and feelings have a physical impact on my body. Since I have learned to change how I let stress affect me, my immune system has improved and I have lost weight. As I continue my practice, my next goal is to further develop my mind and body connection and to eliminate all my medications. If I can lose weight without taking a bunch of pills than I can fix other ailments I suffer that require medication. I know this is possible thanks to this amazing tradition.

I encourage everyone to try and see if it works for them. It is wonderful physical therapy for injuries, arthritis, fibromyalgia, and chronic pain. I have met many students who have had positive and fast results for back and knee problems, concussions, stress, and carpal tunnel. Visit www.oomyungdoe.com to find a location near you. The first lesson is free. What have you got to lose besides pain and discomfort?

Hi Sally,
In the process of taking down the photo I deleted the entire page so you comment is no longer here, my apologies! Thank you for bringing the pic to my attention. I obtained it from the OYD website who has permission from all students when they register to use their photos however I have removed it as a courtesy.

As for OYD being labeled as a cult, all I can say is that people have a right to their opinion. I can only speak for myself and my own experience which as been nothing but positive. OYD teaches how to cultivate and use positive energy to change one’s heath and situation (as well as help others) much like other eastern philosophies such as yoga, tai chi, and acupuncture. I think OYD is not as well known as those forms and people have a fear of the unknown. Again that is just my opinion. I encourage you to try a free lesson to form you own informed opinion based on your experience. Be well!

You are very kind and I am sure this organization uses your good nature to
give it's cult a good reputation. I can appreciate your "honey moon phase" of your cult experience, but still remind you:

Any benefits found in this cult can also be accomplished at a good gym, without having to fill a cult leaders pocket to destroy people.

I think I was not clear when I wrote here last time. I have already been a student in this cult. I knew your leader Tom W. I was conditioned to be a concubine for the higher belts in this cult. I saw this cult fly out their leaders to a school so a girl would abort her baby, in order to free up the higher belt "would be father" to increase cash flow for it's cult. It effects me to this day-25 years later.

I encourage you to read Vivien F's current court case against this cult. Beware of the inner circle there. The agenda on the OYD flyers do not match the agenda in this cult. Thanks for being civil to me. I will no longer bother you.

There are many different ways to be well. Methods that work for some may seem strange or unappealing to others. It is important to be cautious and well informed when joining any new fitness club or practice. If you feel uncomfortable at any point during your training, remove yourself immediately.
